The University City of Oxford was settled in Saxon times, and was initially known as "Oxenaforda" meaning "Ford of the Oxen" fords were more common than bridges at the time. It began with the foundation of an oxen crossing in the early 900 AD period. In the 10th century Oxford became an important military frontier town between the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex and was on several occasions raided by Danes. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English speaking world and one of the most famous and prestigious education institutions of the world.
Oxford city also boasts an impressive range of world renown museums and historical attractions. As well as being a major draw for tourists. Oxford city centre has many shops, several theatres, and an ice rink. The historic buildings make this location a popular target for film and TV crews.
